- I particularly loved the Nereid Monument, the Elgin Marbles, the lapith/centaur metopes.
- None of our group had ever visited the British Museum before and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
- please take your time and enjoy everything the museum has to offer.
- Since the museum is so huge, it is probably best to either allow two days
- Admission is free but please leave a donation in the box at the entrance.
- The things I thought would make the visit uncomfortable, were the exact things that made it wonderful.
- This is one of my favourite places in London....The museum was founded in 1753 and is one of the greatest museums in the world, showing works of man from prehistoric times to present day.
- Some of the highlights of the museum include the Elgin Marbles, the Rosetta Stone, and an amazing collection of mummies and other Egyptian artefacts (the best outside of Egypt, in fact)....There are guides to and quick tours of the museum's highlights, such as the "Highlights" tour offered three times a day (8 pounds; tickets can be purchased in the Great Court)....The Reading Room itself is my favorite part of the museum, a wonderfully historic place, filled floor-to-ceiling with rare first editions.
- adds to the Grandeur of the place.
- The British Museum, which houses one of the best collections of Egyptian artifacts outside Cairo, was the perfect place to take him....The Museum caters to children, not only in providing special tours and events at the Museum, but also in a broader educational sense....We did a great deal of "cyber visiting" at the MuseumÂ's wonderful Ancient Egypt interactive learning site .
- Audio tours can also be helpful.
- In my opinion, British Museum is the greatest historic museum in the world....After adding Rosetta Stone and Parthenon sculptures Robert Smirke was commissioned to build this monumental building.
- The museum is very large and impressive from the outside
- spend a moment marvelling at the wonderful view.
- or they won't give you the tickets--huge glitch in the system) are highly recommended.
- This museum is grand yet inviting....Otherwise, it can be very confusing.
- The service and food were excellent for our visit, and hardly any other customers were there late in the evening.
- Just simply one of the most magnificent museums in the world, containing more than 7 million artifacts, this showcase of the past is now FREE.
- this is a great time to go.
- Even if you are not, it is worth a look just to see all of the stuff
- The new courtyard in the center of the museum is a great place to relax and have a cup of coffee and tea, too.
- It's definitely a great place to visit when you are in London.
- The building itself is impressive enough, especially with the striking half-face statues in front.
- This was a magic time to go
- The museum was great from the first room, where the Rosetta Stone is right in front of you in a glass enclosure.
- Very disappointing -
- There are so many wonderful museums in London
- This is the best museum I have ever been in....Since the museum is free, it is well worth the time.
- Admission to the museum is free, although donations are requested....Since the museum covers over 13 acres, an orientation tour can save you from wasting your valuable time roaming around aimlessly.
- Amazing!...I love this Museum!
- They had to be disassembled and then reassembled once inside this grand museum.
- it opened in 1753, the British Museum is undoubtedly worth a trip to London in itself....while the "classical tour" is expensive, the volunteer-run Eye-opener Tours covering individual sections of the museum are free....In general, the large tours avoid the side galleries, so

- You won't find a better price (free) for this many hours of entertainment and education.
- Admission is free but please leave a donation in the box at the entrance.
- You can even sign up for a free Eye Opener tour
- We did a great deal of "cyber visiting" at the MuseumÂ's wonderful Ancient Egypt interactive learning site .
- Many people avoid the exhibit for the cost, but in this case
- Admission is free to all
- This two-acre area, known as The Great Court, now the continentÂ's largest covered public space, was an expensive (a million and a half pounds) conversion
- Even the kids will like it!
- there's such a great deal to see.
- since all museums in London are free, we thought we'd check it out -
- Since the museum is free, it is well worth the time.

Service
- The service and food were excellent for our visit, and hardly any other customers were there late in the evening.
- ThatÂ's surprising, because none of the souvenir shops or countless restaurants are closed during museum hours due to lack of personnel.
Facilities
- They've got terrific gift shops!
- The Assyrian/Babylonian exhibit had a nice display of ancient furniture, altars, weaponry and statues.
- The Roman-Britain sections includes, among others, the aforementioned Lindow Man, thought to be the victim of ritual sacrifice and the splendid Sutton Hoo Ship.
- The Reading Room itself is my favorite part of the museum, a wonderfully historic place, filled floor-to-ceiling with rare first editions.
- It includes monumental statues, sarcophagi, hieroglyphic tablets, jewelry, household objects, scarabs, shabti, and, of course, mummies.
- Vast and confounding, the many rooms include the Rosetta Stone and a great collection of Egyptian antiquities, as well as the Elgin Marbles.
- This popular site also has a ample gift shop and cafe.
- The KingÂ's Library is quite interesting.
- Their Egyptian exhibits are among the best in the world, and the Greek and Asian rooms are fabulous as well.
- Be sure to also check out the beautiful library in the center courtyard.
- The gift shop is wonderful, with great gift items for everyone on your list, including yourself.
- Be sure to pick up a free map and note...if you're stuck in a crowd, these rooms (which tend to also have the more informative labeling) are the best respites within these collections.
- The service and food were excellent for our visit, and hardly any other customers were there late in the evening.
- picked up quick tea from one of the Marks and Spencer takeaway shops.
Atmosphere
- Although there are prize attractions like the Rosetta Stone and the Elgin Marbles (sculptures and carvings from the Parthenon), these seemed to be very crowded areas of the museum
- Also free, but often crowded, this is a sight you cannot miss.
- The ground floor is the most impressive in the museum, featuring treasures from Greece, Rome, and western Asia.
- This two-acre area, known as The Great Court, now the continentÂ's largest covered public space, was an expensive (a million and a half pounds) conversion
- that makes the museum crowded.
- it's striking.
- the night viewings allow one to see the selected galleries in a much shorter time, due to the lack of crowds.
- Atmosphere wonderful, and the staff most helpful.
- As would be expected, the place is huge and crowded
- It's perhaps the most attractive juxtaposition of historical and contemporary architecture in a city full of such combinations.
Activities/Exhibits
- It houses the finest collection of archaeological and historical artefacts in the World, covering cultures from every corner of the Globe.
- Combine that with the unparalleled collection of antiquities and this is a must see....I had always heard the British had an astounding collection and I was not let down....The Assyrian/Babylonian exhibit had a nice display of ancient furniture, altars, weaponry and statues.
- They were fascinated, as were the adults, with the exhibit.
- A breathtaking collection of the now-defunct British Empire.
- In this collection resides the infamous Rosetta Stone, which finally allowed modern day man to decipher hieroglyphics.
- Some of the highlights of the museum include the Elgin Marbles, the Rosetta Stone, and an amazing collection of mummies and other Egyptian artefacts (the best outside of Egypt, in fact).

- The ground floor is the most impressive in the museum, featuring treasures from Greece, Rome, and western Asia.
- a visitor can tend to gloss over many items.
- The walls of several halls are covered with ancient Egyptian paintings with those famous static figures that havenÂ't lost the brightness of color either....You can also see here the famous Rosetta Stone that was discovered in 1799 by Napoleon troops.
- was enjoyable even if some of the artifacts were hard to find.
- A wheel chair would be great as the whole exhibit is quite accessible.
- Since this renovation, the superb collection of manuscripts is now housed separately, in its own controversial building at 96 Euston Road, NW1 (British Library)....Special exhibitions cost around $8 for adults and about $5.50 for seniors, students, and children under 16.
- Crowds make me feel overwhelmed and often the more important pieces are hard to see.
- I also found the North American gallery interesting.
- The building itself is impressive enough, especially with the striking half-face statues in front.
- The British Museum has to be one of the most extraordinary collections of historical artifacts in the world....It took me 2 hours just to see the first floor, which holds their most spectacular artifacts in the Egyptian rooms and the Ancient Greek rooms.
- Plus, itÂ's too big to see in one visit, so IÂ've been able to break up the exhibits
- a lot of the public museums are free for viewing standard collections in England, except for special exhibitions.
- The museum was great from the first room, where the Rosetta Stone is right in front of you in a glass enclosure.
- Wear comfortable shoes and clothes.
- The history and sheer number of objects here is incredible....love artistic pieces from all over the world, this is a place to spend a couple of days.
- The gift shop is wonderful, with great gift items for everyone on your list, including yourself.
- At peak times, head for less famous collections:
